Abstract Electronically assisted recruiting and online interview vs. paper-pencil-recruiting and CATI-interview in a customer satisfaction survey. The infas Institute for Applied Social Sciences (Institut für angewandte Sozialwissenschaft GmbH) conducts for the Deutsche Bahn AG comprehensive customer satisfaction surveys twice a year. Therefore, railway customers are recruited on site in the areas of railway stations and mass transit to interview them by phone a few days later. In order to simplify this method, an electronically assisted alternative with subsequent online-interview was tested in an experimental design with 1,100 respondents. The interviewers used PDAs with a GSM-card for the recruiting. The respondents' addresses were directly fed into the PDA and immediately transmitted to a central server, which directly again sent a welcome email to the participants including a link to the respective online-questionnaire. This online-questionnaire matched the otherwise applied CATI-questionnaire to a wide extent. Since the participants could decide in the recruiting phase whether they wanted to be interviewed online or by phone, and nonrespondents of the online-questionnaire were additionally contacted via CATI after some time elapsed, the design provides results for all combinations of the recruiting and survey alternatives. This conceptual design supplies statements concerning the effects of the recruiting alternative as well as the survey method, which have been tested in multivariate procedures. Additionally, results from the collateral "classic" survey with more than 24,000 respondents can be consulted for comparison. Yet, the realised samples (return rate and selectivity) and analysed results (rating pattern) are different. On the one hand, target persons could be motivated to participate by electronic recruiting and subsequent online-interview, who would presumably have refused participating in the "classic" survey. On the other hand, target groups can be identified, who are exclusively willing to be interviewed by phone, in spite of internet availability. Moreover, online-respondents answer more positive than CATI-respondents even when checking the sample-structure. Besides, effects can be detected, resulting from the optical design of the online-questionnaire due to the implementation of combined satisfaction and saliency scales in long item batteries. These results are completed by perceptions of a short follow-up survey, where the participants were asked to assess their interview situation. The overall results recommend a combined design of online and CATI method to improve the sample's quality.
